Password-Protect a Contract PDF — The Method That Actually Works

ANUBIS PDF · 2026-10-31

A contract usually contains salaries, bank details and penalty clauses. Sending it as an open PDF by email or WhatsApp means anyone along the way — or anyone using a shared device — can read it. A password on the file is not a luxury, but it is not the whole of protection either.

To be straight with you: the protection tool in Anubis PDF cannot currently write real PDF encryption in the browser, so we do not ask for a password and then promise protection that never happens. This page explains the methods that genuinely work, and where we can help you today.

Three methods that really encrypt

1. Adobe Acrobat

Under Tools choose Protect a PDF → Encrypt with password, set AES-256 and choose permissions (no copying, no printing). It is the strongest and clearest route, but it needs Acrobat and is not free. Adobe’s online service uploads the file to Adobe servers, which may not suit a confidential contract.

2. macOS Preview

Open the file in Preview, choose File → Export, tick Encrypt and enter a password. Free and fully offline, but it only exists on a Mac.

3. LibreOffice

Open the document, choose File → Export as PDF, and on the General tab enable “Encrypt with password”, then set the open password and the printing/copying permissions. Free, offline, and the practical choice on Windows and Linux.

Common questions

Is a PDF password real encryption?

With AES-256 chosen at save time, yes: the content is encrypted and unreadable without the password. Permissions-only restrictions (blocking copy or print without an open password) are cosmetic and can be bypassed with widely available tools.

What if I forget the password?

Standard encryption offers no recovery. That is exactly why you keep an unencrypted master copy in a safe place before distributing.

Can Anubis PDF password-protect my file?

Not yet. Our local processing engine does not write PDF encryption, and we will not ask you for a password and then promise protection that is not real. What we can do today is remove extra pages, merge annexes and add a watermark.

Is my file uploaded when I use your tools?

No. Splitting, merging and watermarking all run inside your browser — you can unplug the network while they work to verify it.

We do not sell protection we cannot deliver: our tools run inside your browser, and what we cannot do, we say plainly.
